It is always important to know who you’re dealing with and what motivates them. If you are going to spend time with Fred Flintstone, you’d help yourself to bone up on bowling and Brontosaurus burgers. Going to lunch with the local tv weather guy? You might spend time discussing Doppler radar, and it might not hurt to have a cloud joke or two up your sleeve (I have never heard a cloud joke. But if you know one, leave it in the comments!) If you want to know what makes Kristy Bruns of Valley Center’s Prairie Song Designs tick, ask her about her family. In particular her grandchildren.
Kristy with her three loves.
Last Autumn we got to do an awesome shoot with Kristy and some of her family on a gorgeous fall day in the yummy late afternoon light. This summer she hired us to come and photograph her entire family in the beauty of the yard of her Valley Center home she would soon be leaving. Kristy and her husband, Fred, raised their children in this home and lovingly built up amazing gardens and a goldfish pond. Many, many, countless hours of love and labor went into that yard. And it was her haven. But life is full of change and she and Fred sold that house in order to build a home near their son, daughter-in-law and three grandkids. Kristy is that kind of Nana: an “I’ll drive the kids to school and Scouts, the kids will always have bedrooms in my home, I will never miss an important moment sort” of Nana.
And the attention Kristy pays to detail in all things family-related, is the same sort of attention and focus you’ll get when you utilize her company Prairie Song Designs. We hired Prairie Song when putting together our new website. She knows her stuff. Prairie Song is focused on web design more than web development. She has an extensive background in graphic design and brings years of this experience and a keen eye to each project. Prairie Song loves to work with businesses that appreciate the visual aspects of their website, and can also offer peripheral marketing products. When dealing with this company one finds a great blend of tech ability and aesthetically pleasing expression all wrapped up in a local, small business vibe that feels great to support.
And part of this is because when you hire Kristy, you ARE hiring local. She has lived here for decades and cares deeply about community. She is a hardcore recycler, an animal rescuer who will roll up her sleeves and wash dogs to raise money for a shelter, a civic-minded networker who shows up at meetings and stays late to help out. She offers her time and talent to more than one cause. Quietly.
She cares about the businesses she works with, and loves to help them succeed. When asked what she loves most about her work she replied, “I love mentoring and getting my clients excited about all the new marketing tools. It used to be expensive to advertise, (print ads, radio, TV) but now there are so, so many free options with social media and the internet. It’s fun seeing them discover what they can learn to do themselves.”
In her down time she dreams of the rare moments she can enjoy a long bath while listening to a book with her ear buds and drinking a glass of wine. But I know that, right up there with that bath, she’d also choose to hold a grandchild in her lap and read to them.
Patrick and I have both known Kristy through BNI (Business Networking International) for three years. We know, like, and trust her. She is solid. She is funny. And she has a heart of gold. If your web site can use some love, look up my friend at Prairie Song Designs. If she does a really great job for you, maybe you can send her some bubble bath. Or a book recommendation to read to her grandchildren.
